Forgive the lame thread name lol...I couldnt think of anything really decent with all this stuff going round in my head at the mo lol. Feel free to rename it, as I'm sure someone will be able to think of something better...?

For the greater good, I thought I'd share my feelings and findings on .hack//G.U. here, after watched the trailer backwards and forwards, over and over...here we go;

I started to think when I was going back and forth through it (the 150k version, altho poorer quality is ALOT more reliable) about what it means at the start...it says;

'When ''It'' was born'
'The first thing it saw'
'Was a PK'

Then there are flashes of this AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Data Anomoly (sp?)).
So I'm thinking, a normal player gets PK'd in Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground, and this AIDA takes control of the characters body (There is a bit where the word AIDA appears with the character [Pic]. More evidence to support this lies in the fact that before we see the caption 'When ''It'' was born', we see the figure of a someone [Pic], and the main (? I speculate the character that the trailer focuses on is who we play as) character falling, then after the caption the character is lying on the ground. At the end of the trailer tho, we see someone [Pic] help the character, and he says 'Welcome to the World', which then flashes up.

Also, this could explain the 'suped up' weapons [Pic of ChainSaw-Sword...thing] the character has, the AIDA gives him more power?? I originally thought the difference in weapons proof that this must be a much later version of 'The World' than we've seen before, but on some reflection, I'm not so sure...but more than likely it is, just that this character (who we play as? probably.) is a bit more spectacular than the rest, special if you will. Like Kite in the first 4 games.

As for why is Kite evil (the darker look about him, green face - like a zombie almost [Pic])...maybe its the system fighting against the AIDA, as Kite is a hero of The World, what better character model to build the ultimate opponent with? And the other characters it names (are they the new phases? more below...) are also possibly trying to stop/destroy the AIDA...this is supported by the fact that they fight, [Pic], and then 'Evil Kite' DataDrains (or thats how it appears) the character [Pic]

Oh, and about GU, and what it might stand for - on the evidence of this pic, and others times when I've paused the trailer, there are lots of different things GU stands for by the looks...but come release time, maybe they will be one true meaning?

So then, your thoughts on 'Evil Kite'? The main character? What exactly is AIDA? Who or what are the people that are named - the next phases? What is their purpose? So many questions...lets hear some theories!

I think evil kite is the same as the one on the small manga sections at the end of each legend of twilight/uneden book...in which Kite fights balmung...in the third book he data drains him...but balmung says"this man...that Kite!!Not him...!!"..he is saying that isn't the real kite...Maybe this is what happens just before Project GU...

those 8 phases... have the same titles as the original ones

I think the program that harald created is starting again..to make another ultimate AI. but since the eight faces were destroyed...new ones are needed...maybe this new phases are the next part of the epithaph...rember the first eight were the ones that prevented people that the wave was about to come...what if this is the REAL wave...in that case we know we will see Lios and Helba again...

If you see the video the sanctuary no longer has the statue of aura... which means she is free now(remember the eight chains?)...a new ultimate AI is about to be born...and Morganna want to make sure that no one interfears...maybe she took Kite's account to make sure he can't help...or she made a copy...that can fight back...

I am not sure about in which year Project GU happens...but it can be after uneden...or between the games and uneden...

Kite was supposed to be the twilight dragon...for he was the only one that could fight the cursed wave...what if kite wasn't really the dragon..
In the epitaph...apeiron(lios) and Helba are in search for the twilight dragon...but that is after the cursed wave appears...then the twilight dragon would be someone that would appear after kite...maybe this new character is the twilight dragon...

Here it talks about how the bracelet is destroyed..but what if it isn't talking about the bracelet destruction...it says the bracelet is turned into nothing and left on the temple of arche koeln...the bracelet is in the sanctuary...maybe evil kite isn't from morganna...is the bracelet...it has come back..the shadowless one is Kite...the bracelet shall not return to kite...

The wife buffeted by "waves" turns her back on the field.
The daughter that waited for the shadows repeated,
"For sure... For sure I can go home."
But the girl did not know...
The truth that waited at the end of the journey

Wife?...maybe it is talking of a mother...Aura...and the girl is Zefie...Aura is gone...back home....to the home of AI's...net slum...and Zefie is trying to get there

The place of calamitous is the sanctuary where aura's statue is...the dark void...is where aura sleeps is .hack sign....and where evil kite came from...this means that after being destroyed...the bracelet returner to it's place of origin...where aura was awakened...remember the bracelet was part of aura...but morganna made aura unable to use her powers...so she transformed them into a bracelet and gave them to orca...who trusted it to Kite

Riding fast on the path is Skeith
Bearing death's shadow, it eliminates all that seek to thwart it.
The Confusing Mirage, Innis
Deceives those that see it with illusions, rescues the waves
The wave soaring high, when its head is smashed,
A new wave will emerge

This is a repetition of the introduction to the cursed wave...but it doesn't especify if this is the same as before...neither it says it is a sign of the wave...maybe if we chnge the names to the new phases...

Perhaps then the Wave is just a
beginning as well.

The story has been repeated once...maybe it will just keep repeating...

I don't think that is Kite. Although you DO have a damn good theory. We're also not entirely sure about who the main character is, so I cannot comment on that.

I think AIDA might be another corruption of data or something... not too sure about that.

It would make sense, I agree with you on the phase thing.

Now that I have seen the video for second time...I noticed that the new phases are normal-looking characters...would they be NPC's?....Maybe Morganna is on the good side now...cause...in the video, ovan...is helping the new character ...maybe the bracelte(evil kite) has gone beserk...maybe because of all the "evil" data morganna tried to insert on aura in dot hack sign...it was left inside the void...and after the bracelet...with kite's data returned there..it absorbed the data Aura didn't take from the guardian(of tsukasa)...since morganna is good now(after quarantine ended and the program was restarted)...she may be wanting to help stop evil kite....maybe the repetition of the cursed wave stanza...is when the signs of the wave turn on the good side......the real wave is...the bracelet...evil kite...

OMG...I forgot about cubia...if the bracelet and cubia are the same...that would mean....
forget my theory about 'evil data left around"....evil kite is cubia...and the bracelet...if the bracelet returned to the dark void...so did cubia...and they joined together...vubia absorbed "leftovers" of Kite's data from the bracelet...and became a copy of Kite....
thats it!...the signs of the wave are the eight phases...the real wave just appears and disappears....but when the signs are done...the cursed wave can totally appear...which is cubia...rejoined with the bracelet...

OK..do y'all remember the bit on either Sign or the games where they go into Net SLum (I think) and they see all of the old, rejected copies of the PCs?

I'm thinkikng it goes like this

Chainsaw character goes into the Forbidden Holy Ground field, and Kite appears. Due to The World being like verion 10.9 or something, he's got a hot weapon, and fights kite, gets data drained. Then Ovan (The Rebirth)(look at both character shots..they look the same to me) comes laong and goes "Welcome to the World".

After watching it again, and at the beginning of the 2nd clip, the actual cutscene one, I think this: AIDA is the name of the Eight Phases plus the main chainsaw guy. The nine of them are working together against Evil Kite, perhaps, reversing the whole epitaph. So, all 8 phases would have to be PCs with special functions, like The Crimson Knights.

My thought is that this version of the world is so far into the future of the game that the history of Kite and Aura and things are all barely memories...and will, perhaps become mere whispers on the BBS like the Key of the Twlilight.

Just some thoughts:

When Ovan says "Welcome to The World" since the guy just got data drained he could be stuck in the game like Tsukasa was. And the new Phases could be kinda like what NorbJunior says like they are player characters with powers or something, they could also be stuck in the game. I also agree that this could be pretty far into the future and what the .hackers did is just Legend from the past, I mean look how dark everyone and everything looks...almost everything.

I could not describe my surprise/shock/amazement/wonder/etc. Simply, nearly no emotion actually.
The beginning seems like something I would see from Guild Wars. A large party of friends, or more likely, a guild doing battle. Not to the scale of a Warcraft's massive blitzberg of course. Anyway, somebody who reached the level cap faces of with moderately high leveled players, and takes them all out single handedly. We also see bits of images of what will probably be surporting characters. What made me happy yet upset was the design, which is fairly to common, yet anime styled games are all similar in some ways.
The other battle speaks for itself in a way, and I have never heard music like that since Voices of a Distant Star. Actually, a lot of the music was a remix of the original .hack OST. The ending with its voice, along with the 'A' are all trademarks of .hack and computer results. It seems sweet, yet I was hoping it wouldn't have that powerful of a tie with dot.hack.

If all you did was play as the original 8 phases, first of all, it is impossible to win. Second of all, it would get boring after a while, and you can't even do stuff like have hassles with the shops.

Oh my god. Just as a note, I could write a really nice fanfic about the trailer. I have that good of an imagination, and noticed all the details. However, because the DVD maker dosn't support all movies despite the file type, I can't view individual slides. (I'm guessing the trailer has 10,000.) However, the Fear of Death's character had what seemed like a lover/girlfriend, who was killed by the "Kite" avatar. Yes, I had to use primitive means to view individual slides, and it's strenuous. But the girl was attacked, and the guy was still a "n00b" at the time. Also, he seemed to have recognized the "A" sound.

My little guess at a general story would be this guy whose most likely the main character, use to be a stronger high leveled character who seemed to like to PK until the incident in the trailer where he fights the Kite character, who seems to be a data bug possibly because I noticed the streams of data around him that the data bugs in the game had. He then ends up being data drained by this Kite avatar. The main character would have ended up in a coma like in the previous .hack games but until that guy, Ovan the Rebirth appears, but as a result of the data drain he was reduced back to the beginning as a lvl 1 character.

I came up with this idea because you notice the character in two different types of clothing, one that looks all l33t and pro and then another one that looks like an average beginning twin blade player.

Of course it doesn't explain a lot of things still like that girl you notice when he's in the church as well as many other things but it might explain some things.

ok guys, just watched through the trailer a few times, and here are my thoughts....

• IMO, the whole trailer is the conception of the evil kite. I believe the PK it first see's is the character it Data Drains(this being spotlighted at the beginning, middle and end of the trailer). As we see during the trailer, the situation of the world appears to have, somwhat degraded, with full out PK battles occurring(as we see during the all out brawl). The guy who gets data drained appears to be a leader of either side, so could he be the PK that AIDA first see's....
  
  Throughout the trailer, I am pretty sure i saw images of at least Tsukasa and BT, but i will not be sure until i get onto my mates PC and use his video equipment. This could just be a nod back to its history....or maybe something more.
  
  AIDA, Artifical Intelligence Data Anomoly(sp), IMO is the evil Kite. We see its conception in what appears to be the most important place in the .hack world, and as the data has yet to take form, i believe what we saw(the blue cell like thing)to be its first appearance in the world.
  
  As we know in the .hack series, data remnants of characters and enemies past are kept in the net slums. If the whole of the evil in the world was not destroyed by kite and crew, it is possible that what little was left attached itself onto kites data and slowly, but surely grew and corrupted the data. And of course, for what appears to be an evil presence, the most influential and possibly powerful character to ever exist in the world would be a perfect choice for one such as aida. The same can be said if AIDA has nothing to do with morganna, Kite would probably always be the most attractive character to anything like this.

Thats all for the mo, i'll post some more later.

edit-what has just occurred to me is that AIDA(if it is the kite lookalike)is already corrupted. the trailer says that the first thing Aida saw as a PK, so this could also be what corrupted it, so it may not have anything to do with morganna. However, if this is correct, the data drain we see in the trailer is not the first time AIDA had appeared, as he would have had to have experienced the acts of a PK to become so disenheartened and evil.[/list]

After some more reflection, I'm beginning to think a little different on the 'Phase' characters. The fact there are 8, and as already pointed out by others, there are also similarites points to the fact that they are something along the lines of the new 'Phases' for G.U...however, take a look at Ovan, and then the person who the helps the 'Main Character' (lets call him MC for now...) towards the end of the trailer.
They look very similar, yes? He helps MC, and says 'Welcome to the World'. Not something an evil character would do...
Also, the fact he says 'Welcome to the World' indicates that this is at the start of the game...and that MC is new to the world. I'm going to stick with my theory about AIDA on this.
The 8 characters that are mentioned, one of them being Ovan, obviously hold alot of importance in the story. They could be high level characters, employee's of CC Corp...some sort of enforcers in the world, like the Crimson Knights, or even a group of hackers?? Whatever, they are special in some way.
And because of this, they would know of the AIDA, and its taking 'host' of this character...and so, Ovan welcomes it to The World.
Just some more specualtion.

As for AIDA's story, AIDA is not evil, just berserk. His knight armor is badass. It is clear that he is wearing it only while on his killing spree. It gets erased during the drain, possibly along with his only instruction to kill.

While we are still unaware of the circumstances surrounding AIDA's inception, these messages in the outset of the trailer can be attributed to why he PKs everyone; it is all he knows. He is a systemic anomaly, like the Phases, only without any programmed function, where the Phases did, so he does what he learns how to do - PK everyone. He then meets the somewhat invincible zombie AI Kite and gets slaughtered and drained. He is then offered "Rebirth" by Ovan, one of the eight humanoids who now take the place of the Phases. Their actual role, be it good or bad, has yet to be determined.

As for Kite, my working theory is that he is just like the trashed AIs from Net Slum or the AIs from //SIGN that accompany you after defeating Corvenik. The system, seeing AIDA's berserker ways, uses this Kite as a remedy to AIDA's behaviour, just as Cubia was a remedy to Kite's alleged illegal activity.

Now erased, AIDA remains an AI Twin Blade, but what will he do next?

As for AIDA = Haseo as it has been said, I think it is very possible, since they do share a similar appearance as well as the tendency to kill.

I agree...(but I still think that kite is cubia)...and...that wavemaster...I am not sure if it is female or male...I couldn't see it's face really well...but it really looks like hotaru chan...from the uneden books...

he noticed the A sound...that means...he must be familiarized with the cursed wave...although...I have been watching the video various times...but still I can't see the wavemaster's face...it's too shiny...but I noticed the mushroom like hat...that means it is a girl...male wavemasters have crown like hats...maybe...the phases were really AI characters that runned around the world as normal characters...but when morganna decided to use them to kill aura...that disquise wouldn't be needed anymore...(the phases were supposed to look for data that could help aura develop an AI...the disguise was to be around users to recolect data)...mow that marganna restarted herself and is good now...the phases are vagrant AI's and are free to do whatever they want...just like Mia...but Mia was actually separated from the phase...so she is no longer a phase...the wavemaster girl can be a friend that Haseo met...
